HYMN REVIEW

 Spirit of God, Descend Upon My Heart

Spirit of God, descend upon my heart;

Wean it from earth, through all its pulses move;

Stoop to my weakness, mighty as thou art,

And make me love thee as I ought to love.

Hast thou not bid us love thee, God and King?

All, all thine own, soul, heart, and strength and mind.

I see thy cross - there teach my heart to cling:

O let me seek thee, and O let me find.

Teach me to feel that thou art always nigh;

Teach me the struggles of the soul to bear,

To check the rising doubt, the rebel sigh;

Teach me the patience of unanswered prayer.

Teach me to love thee as thine angels love,

One holy passion filling all my frame;

The baptism of the heav’n descended Dove,

My heart an altar, and thy love the flame.

MY REFLECTIONS FROM THE HYMN

Ever wondered about the role of the Holy Spirit in our lives? Think of sanctification, seeing how the Lord constantly works in us to conform us to His holy standards.

Moments come, and it should always be that we desire to love the Lord, daily desiring the infilling of the Holy Spirit anew. Journeying through the postmodern era calls us to ask the Holy Spirit to come and descend on us, causing us to grow in love. Love in its purest aroma—1 Corinthians 13 paints this incredible picture for us. Love is surely indispensable, such an excellent way to live as Christians.

We have such a magnificent Father, who art not in wooden vessels nor resides in golden statues, but His body is a mystery to us. Think of His omniscient nature. This should give us great assurance as we journey through this life. We will soon see Him and join Him; our pilgrimage is surely short. May we not forget this and place our confidence in earthly delights.

He commanded us to love, and not just half-heartedly but with our whole selves, our entire being. Surely the Lord is good. He deserves all, and all belongs to Him. Let our bodies not grow tired of serving, nor our minds wander from this truth. A broken heart to the Lord brings healing to receive, to find the Lord, yes, to seek His face.

Omniscient God, He is always near. Our struggles and strife, our adverse moments, should not keep us from Him. We are called to bear all of life's struggles; in perseverance, we stand. In sweet moments of prayer and with a long-suffering heart, we wait and do not complain to the Lord.

Love, and love, a great command for us to live and abide by, as we journey through this life. Reflect on how you have been growing; see if there is a need to change. Do you believe you are living in love? Do you know Christ? Have you accepted His Lordship? I invite you to ponder on the above beautiful hymn of old. Pray and let the Holy Spirit fill you anew.
